SIMONETT, Justice.

Defendant was found guilty by a district court jury of two counts of assault in the second degree and one count of burglary, Minn.Stat. §§ 609.05, 609.11, 609.222, 609.- 58, subd. 2(1) (1980). The trial court sentenced defendant to consecutive terms of 54 months each for the assault convictions and to a concurrent term of 25 months for the burglary conviction. Defendant’s trial counsel filed a notice of appeal from judgment of conviction. The state public defender agreed to let the trial counsel file a separate brief on defendant’s behalf challenging defendant’s sentence…
