The civil service commission and the individual members thereof appeal from the judgment of the superior court granting a writ of mandate ordering that Dennis Davis, respondent, be reinstated as deputy sheriff, with back pay and benefits for the period from August 13, 1975, to November 24, 1976. This period represents the interval between respondent’s discharge by the sheriff and the decision of the civil service *419commission upholding the discharge.
