We are asked here to determine the extent to which the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the Federal Constitution are applicable to actions for defamation by private individuals against defendants who are not publishers or broadcasters; alternatively, we shall decide as a matter of state law whether the law of defamation should be changed in view of recent decisions of the Supreme Court. See Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U. S. 323, 94 S. Ct. 2997, 41 L.Ed.2d 789 (1974).
