Dr. Mohamed El Deeb, who is Egyptian by birth, began teaching at the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota in 1980. He was a tenured associate professor by mid-1990, when he advised Dr. William Liljemark, his department chairman, that he wanted to apply for promotion to full professor, effective in mid-1991. Dr. Liljemark indicated that he would not support Dr. El Deeb’s promotion but suggested that Dr. El Deeb ask another department member to sponsor him (which Dr. El Deeb did).
