The opinion entered in this cause on December 23, 1997, is withdrawn, and the following opinion is substituted therefor.

Alvin Urial Goodwin, a Texas death row inmate convicted of capital murder, challenges the district court’s denial of his petition for a writ of habeas corpus. Goodwin has alleged, among other things, that his appellate counsel provided constitutionally ineffective assistance because he failed to raise a state law issue that would have required reversal on direct appeal.
