Petitioner Kerry Newman asks the Court to vacate his 2001 guilty plea to a criminal information charging him with one count of wire fraud. Newman alleges that his attorney provided ineffective assistance of counsel by failing to inform him that his plea, to a near certainty, would cause him to be deported, in violation of the rule announced by the Supreme Court in Padilla v. Kentucky, 559 U.S. 356, 130 S.Ct. 1473, 176 L.Ed.2d 284 (2010). The government argues that Newman’s conviction must stand because it became final in 2001 and…
