SHEDD, Circuit Judge:

Thomas Michael Larry was sentenced to death after a North Carolina jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. Larry unsuccessfully challenged his conviction and sentence in state court, both on direct appeal and in collateral proceedings, and then filed a petition for writ of habeas corpus in federal district court.
