The petitioner, Charles A. Shepard, a major in the medical corps of the United States army, has been, convicted of the murder of his wife, Zenana Shepard, at Fort Riley, Kansas, a United States military reservation. The jury having qualified their verdict by adding thereto the words “without capital punishment” (18 U.S.C. §567), the defendant was sentenced to imprisonment for life.
