In January of 1934 Charles Puhse and his family resided in Granite City, Illinois. He was then forty-eight years old, and his wife, Gertrude, to whom he had been married twenty-five years and who was his junior by four years, lived with him. Of this marriage two children had been borne — Mildred, aged twenty-two, and Earl, aged nineteen. Both of these children lived with their parents.
