In an action to recover damages for defamation, the defendant appeals from an order of the Supreme Court, Suffolk County (Doyle, J.), dated February 16, 2006, which granted the plaintiffs motion pursuant to CPLR 3126 to strike his answer *1157for failure to provide disclosure and denied, as academic, his motions, inter alia, to compel the plaintiff to provide discovery and set the matter down for an inquest on damages.

Ordered that the order is reversed, on the law, with costs, the plaintiffs motion is denied, and the matter is remitted to the Supreme Court, Suffolk County, for a determination of…
