Year-end performance bonuses can be a useful tool for motivating employees, so long' as the employees' know in advance that the' quality of their work will be reflected in their paychecks. The federal government accordingly allows federal grantees to award performance bonuses that are reasonable, announced in advance, and adequately documented.
