¶1 "[C]riminal justice today is for the most part a system of pleas, not a system of trials." Lafler v. Cooper , 566 U.S. 156, 170, 132 S.Ct. 1376, 182 L.Ed.2d 398 (2012). Nowhere is this more apparent than in the U.S. Supreme Court's recent estimation that "[n]inety-seven percent of federal convictions and ninety-four percent of state convictions are the result of guilty pleas."
