Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient hormones. Symptoms include fatigue, extreme sensitivity to cold, joint pains, muscle aches, and weight gain. Left untreated, victims eventually suffer hair loss, numbness in the limbs, depression, and mental confusion. For more than 40 years hormone-replacement therapy based on levothyrox-ine sodium has been used to alleviate these symptoms.
