Prior to September, 1916, Grant Buckner had been a resident of Monroe County for 18 years. During that period of time, he had been in the continuous employment of the Monroe Hotel as its cook. He made his *621home at the hotel. During that period of time, he was not the head of a family. He had been married, but his wife had been divorced from him, and had obtained the custody of their only child, a daughter. He was a colored man. He had formerly lived at Oskaloosa.
