The defendant, Bernon Howery, was charged by indictment with four counts of first-degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(2)), four counts of felony murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(a)(3)) and one count of aggravated arson (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 20 — 1.1). Following a bench trial, the circuit court of Kankakee County found the defendant guilty of all charges.
