This is an action brought by the Attorney-General, in behalf of the people, under sections 1781 and 1782 of the Code of Civil Procedure, to compel an accounting by certain officers and directors of the defendant Equitable Life Assurance Society, “ for their official conduct in the management and disposition of the funds and property, *341committed to their charge” (Code Oiv.
