I dissent. “Supreme Court Rule 451(a) (134 Ill. 2d R. 451(a)) requires a trial court to instruct the jury pursuant to the pattern criminal instructions, unless the trial court determines that the pattern instruction does not accurately state the law. [Citation.] Although a trial court should use a pattern instruction if an appropriate one exists, the decision whether to give a nonpattern instruction remains a matter within the sound discretion of the trial court.” People v.
