The claimant named, and a large number of other individuals, and of various firms, bring this suit jointly. They set forth as the ground of their claim, and upon which they base their right to recover, that one Elie Cote, late of the city of Charleston, South Carolina, in 1865 was the owner of 75 bales of upland cotton ; that upon the capture of Charleston by the forces of the United States in February, 1865, the cotton was seized by the officers of the United States army, and shipped to the treasury agent at New York; and that the cotton was sold by him, and the net proceeds paid into the…
