In 1971 plaintiff Betts was a student majoring in physical education at the University of Michigan. One of the requirements for his degree was that he train under the supervision of a certified teacher for a short period commonly referred to as "student teaching”, or "practice teaching”. Betts student-taught at a junior high school in the Ann Arbor public school system from January to April, 1971.
